Propane is known for its strong safety record, thanks to stringent industry regulations and high standards.

However, it’s crucial to know how to protect yourself if you ever smell gas — whether it’s at home or around gas-powered equipment and appliances. Acting quickly can save lives and prevent damage to property. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Extinguish any open flames or sources of ignition, such as candles or cigarettes.
2. Leave the area immediately. Do not stay inside the house or vicinity where you detect gas.
3. Avoid using light switches, thermostats, telephones or any appliances until you are safely away from the area.
4. If it’s safe to do so, close the gas valve on the propane tank or cylinder.
5. Once at a safe distance, call 911 and contact France Propane Service.
6. Allow emergency responders and licensed propane technicians to inspect the area for escaped gas and complete any necessary repairs.
7. Stay away from the area until emergency personnel or technicians confirm that it is safe to return. Do not attempt to reopen the propane supply valve or reenter the area, even if the smell of gas fades.
8. A trained propane service technician should repair any leaks, thoroughly inspect all gas appliances, and safely relight pilot lights.
